January 20th,21st and 22nd- Amazing Day of Eating

On Tuesday I didn't eat a real meal all day. I ate a random collection of leftovers and also made some frozen jalepeno poppers.

Yesterday was one of the greatest days of eating that I can remember in a long time. Ton and I went up to our old stomping grounds of New Brunswick for the RU vs. Louisville game and some good eating.

Here is the rundown:

First stop around 1:30 was the famed RU grease trucks. Click the link if you are not familiar with grease trucks. These sandwiches have been a staple in my life since I set foot on Rutgers campus in 2001 and mostly responsible for the 30+ pounds I put on since graduating high school. It was not out of the ordinary for me to eat two of these in a night and by like the second month of school the guys at the trucks already knew my order. In 2004, Maxim named one of the sandwiches the best sandwich in the country. I got the Fat Va Va Voom today which consists of cheesesteak, bacon, mozzarella sticks, french fries and marinara sauce.

Next stop was Stuff yer Face. Stuff yer Face is known for its extensive beer selection and its boli's. Also, the food network chef Malto Mario worked there when he attended Rutgers. We didn't intend to eat here but the boli aroma got to me after 3 or 4 Rogue Dead Guy Ale's. I wanted to just get a baby boli which is only 4.5 inches but the baby boli and the 9 inch regular boli were the same price so I ended up getting a chicken and spinach boli. The picture is a little bit dark but you get the idea. It was excellent.

This picture is definitely tough to see. Our next stop was the Olive Branch which was one of our favorite bars in New Brunswick. We drank a bunch of $1 Coors Lights and then ordered our food. Their special is the Dirty Sandwich which is a sandwich packed with all different kinds of things on Garlic Bread rolls. I got the Dirty Hernandez which had chicken fingers, jalepeno poppers, cheese and salsa along with fries.

After the game we went to one of the greatest places in the world to eat: Mastori's Diner. Mastori's was featured on Food Network a few years back and has a ridiculously extensive menu with amazingly large portions. For appetizer, Ton and I split potato skins with cheddar and bacon (pictured above). I feel without a doubt that Mastori's has the best potato skins of any place I've eaten in my life.

For my main entree I got the Chicken Marsala which I have never had before from there. I don't know if the picture does it justice; there are 3 pieces of chicken there. It also came with two sides, I picked macaroni and cheese and garlic mashed potatoes. Mastori's is also very well known for its fresh baked cheese bread and cinnamon bread that comes prior to your meal. At this point in the evening I was feeling terribly full so I was only able to eat one piece of the chicken and pick at some of the sides before I had to throw in the towel. I got the most terrible painful hiccups when I was driving Ton home and fell asleep with a pretty terrible stomach ache. The amazing day of eating was worth it though.

Today, the only thing I ate was my Mastori's leftovers. They were just as good as the previous night.

  1. The way the sun is hitting that GT in the picture is beautiful. It is like straight up art. I commend you on your day of eating.

  2. to be fair, the guy at the truck knew yours, mine, and Marco Rossi's order, as he would say all three in succession when he saw the three of us turn the corner, walking up as if we were on a mission from god.

all in all it was a great day. although I would have loved to have squeezed in thomas sweets, some how, some way.

Also, you forgot to mention Mastori's' cinnamon and cheese bread, a beloved staple and integral cog in the Mastori's experience.
